"Make Verga great again" some would say, with the idea of honoring him and sponsoring this immense inherited and precious heritage for all of us.

Translated by Pietro Patrizi

The Italian Literary Parks redefine the boundaries of beauty, especially if we are talking about our own beauty, but with a broader sense of the term, not Vizzinese nor Sicilian nor Italian but Worldly. In this case, the purpose is to give the material and immaterial inheritance that Verga left us, the value it deserves, through the establishment of the "Giovanni Verga Literary Park": the vision is to use the power of literary glue to exalt the intrinsic magic of a place such as Vizzini, a galvanizing idea, which could lead, if adopted and “industrialized” in the right way, to significant benefits.

The relaunch and promotion of the territory: the places that inspired Verga to produce the works he wrote, such as the tavern of the gna 'Nunzia in the Cavalleria Rusticana, the village of the Tannery, where the famous duel between compare Alfio and Turiddo took place; The house, near the current medieval castle in the historic Matrice district, in which Verga imagined the residence of Mastro Don Gesualdo in the novel of the same name; the monastery of San Sebastiano in today's central Via Vittorio Emanuele, frequented by Rosalia, a young man with whom Verga fell in love as a teenager and who will give birth to the epistolary novel Storia di una Capinera, etc.

The position of Vizzini within an international scenario: the Giovanni Verga Literary Park would be added to the others already established in Italy and in Europe; the network of parks contributes to making "a place" better known to all, whether it is qualified or not yet well-known, because the goal is to promote in "all" possible ways, including the digital artery of the web, accessible to everyone around the world, regardless of geographic location.

The cornerstones of the territory: The food and wine chain

Many are the first fruits that would be included: from the endemic plant of sumac, once used for skins and nowadays used in gourmet gastronomy; to the prickly pear plant, a fruit covered with a thorny skin that contains a fleshy heart studded with small seeds, with which mustard is made; but also and above all ricotta, for whichVizziniis renowned, home to the famous festival of the 25th of April (today sponsored as the Festival of Flavors and Knowledge).

The whole country is a hotbed of flavors active 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It counts the presence of five bakeries and ten pastry shops, all spread along the 3kms of the town. The bakeries do not just bake bread only, but produce the best local delicacies, such as nucatole, almond pastries stuffed with pistachio and mandarin, cannoli, cassatelle and puff pastry stuffed with zero kilometer ricotta, cream bombs, fried sfinci alla Nutella; not to mention the rotisserie department: cuddiruni, onions, pizzas, scaccioni and arancini / e, etc ...

Churches and art

The country offers a great historical, artistic and cultural heritage, from the beautiful buildings in the Baroque, Arab and Gothic style, to the winding streets in the medieval style. Vizziniwas home to numerous baronies who have left a great stylistic offer for all lovers of architecture and good taste in general. Suffice it to say that at the end of the 19th century forty ecclesiastical buildings were active.

At the time, Vizzinihad about twenty-five thousand inhabitants and the population was very religious, for example, only in the upper district of the matrix, within a radius of 200 meters, were seven churches active.

Folklore, cinema and music

It would be enough to mention the Cavalleria Rusticana by the composer Pietro Mascagni to attract the lyric fetishists, which takes its title from the homonymous Novella; or the film adaptation of director Franco Zeffirelli, to attract lovers of popular cinema, shot in 1981 in Vizzini, where numerous local figures took part, characters from whom pores exude a powerful desire for social redemption, a theme concretized by Verga in the "robba". But that otherwise, compared to the epilogues to which the verist exponent has accustomed us, today they would fully embody the concept of resilience.

"Make Verga great again" some would say, with the idea of honoring him and sponsoring this immense inherited and precious heritage for all of us.
