ParkTime N. 2

30 Novembre 2020

The leaf is the highest form of opening into life, it connects the sky with the earth and gives nourishment to the plant it belongs to, otherwise it could not survive without its photosynthesis or reproduce. There is a whole life in there, that flows in its very thin ribs. It manages to go through all seasons, all changes to reborn again.

In this issue we will talk about wine and we will do it starting from two very special places: the first trip takes us to Sicily in the Regaleali Estate in Tasca d'Almerita and the second takes us to the Cinque Terre, in the places so loved by Eugenio Montale who described that landscape, solitary, seductive and of a hidden beauty, in "People, wine and rocks of the Cinque Terre", his first article of 1946 appeared in Corriere della Sera.

Let's go back to the leaves. If we observe that of the vine, the so-called pampino, we notice how much it has the appearance of a hand, so much so that it is in fact called a palmate leaf. There are many stories about its meaning that have their roots in the mists of time: in the East it was a symbol of well-being so much so that human life was identified with a vine leaf; in the West it is said that Noah, after the Great Flood, was the first to plant his seeds, which are said to have even come from Eden, to make a vineyard. A vineyard that gave new life with its fruits, the vine thus became a symbol of humanity's rebirth and hope.

I like to think that today the leaf of the vine can be a passage towards something else, a symbol above all, on a day of information, awareness and prevention like today 1 December, the World AIDS Day. The global statistics on HIV and AIDS still show us a complex situation from the health point of view, despite the extraordinary scientific advances made in all these years. In addition to this aspect, this World Day is a moment of fundamental discussion on numerous issues on which there is still a lot to work on, especially as regards the psychological and social aspect inherent in the disease. The real challenge is to reduce marginalization by increasing the inclusion of the infected who are an integral part of a society they belong to. Just like the leaves that nourish the plant and form an indissoluble unity with it. Here it is the hope and the wisdom that comes from the leaves for every living being: each winter contains within itself its spring of rebirth.
